Athena Vosh is living a normal teenage life in the year 2099 filled with carefree things like delicious food, watching reality shows, and spending her day working on her hobbies. It has been almost 50 years since an experimental virus was accidentally released, killing all the men in the world. Athena has never known a time with men, however, that could change thanks to a controversial new project set on bringing them back. When the project is sabotaged, the lead detective is told to find Athena. It becomes clear that this teenager may no more than she is aware.

I’ve always been fascinated by books that revolve around dystopian futures, so when I heard the premise of ATHENA’S CHOICE I was instantly drawn to the book. I love what Adam Boostrom has put together with this fascinating take on a future America.

Often with dystopian reads we find viruses or diseases that sweep the population. What sets ATHENA’S CHOICE apart is what civilization’s reaction to this particular disease ends up being. It was fascinating to think about the possibility of a world where only women exist and how I would feel to be placed into that reality. ATHENA’S CHOICE shows a thriving and technologically profound world that truly values female empowerment.

My favorite aspect of this book was that Boostrom didn’t stop with just a simple narrative, but chose to include various supplemental materials. There are pieces of writing from journals, advertisements, excerpts from items written by our characters, and many other interesting items. These additional pieces truly brought the story to life for me.

This is one of those books that’s hard to write a review for because I’m worried I’ll give away something from the plot. What I will tell you is that this book is engaging, fascinating, and really transported me to an alternate 2099. I loved the characters and the plot so much and with the help of super short chapters I was able to quickly binge read this book!
