Book Review: Goodnight Beautiful

Newlyweds Sam Statler and Annie Potter are crazy about each other. They have decided to say goodbye to New York City and start over in Sam’s quaint hometown in upstate New York. Things aren’t quite the way they pictured. Annie spends most of her time alone, while Same works long hours as a therapist in his home office. Sam doesn’t realize that every word he says can be heard from a vent upstairs. When Same goes missing on the night of a big storm, Annie is frantic to find him. What she starts to discover is that her husband had more than one secret he was hiding from her. Could one of them be the reason for his disappearance?

I was a huge fan of Aimee Molloy’s previous release THE PERFECT MOTHER and simply couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into GOODNIGHT BEAUTIFUL! The story sounds simple enough…newlyweds dreaming of a fresh start only to have one of them vanish without a trace. There are always secrets in relationships and Molloy has concocted a great number of entertaining reveals within this story to keep the reader on their toes. There were a few twists I saw coming, but overall I was impressed with the delivery of this story. 

Molloy has chosen to honor a book by a famous author with a chunk of the plot of GOODNIGHT BEAUTIFUL. I won’t say where or what book because that would completely ruin the story. What I will say is that I appreciated the homage to this other work and thought Molloy’s spin on the situation was highly entertaining and suspenseful.

I chose to do a hybrid read/listen with this book, but ultimately got so swept up in the audiobook that it took over the majority of my experience. I truly loved the choice of narrators for this book and I think that they really helped to bring to life the characters for me! I’ve seen a few people say that they weren’t fans, so if you try the audio and find yourself in that camp, I highly suggest giving the physical copy a chance!

If you’re looking for an entertaining psychological thriller I recommend adding GOODNIGHT BEAUTIFUL to your reading lineup!
