ON WRITING is a blend of a memoir and lessons on honing the craft of literature and writing through the mind of Stephen King. This is a must read for anyone who has enjoyed a King book or simply wants a little insider insight on the secrets to his success!

When I first started ON WRITING I was expecting it to immediately kick off with how one can become a successful writer. While that’s not something I’m looking to do career-wise, I figured why not learn a thing or two from King? I was extremely excited to find the first half to be a memoir. I’ve had so many questions about King from the last few years of reading his works and it was amazing to learn about him, how several of his books came into existence, and what his thoughts are on his own books. I was absolutely blown away!

The second half is much more the lesson in writing I thought I had signed up for, but it’s also a lesson on hardwork and doing everything you can to make your dreams come true. You could feel King’s love of writing pouring from the pages and it made me 110% okay with getting a lesson on grammar!

Audiobook lovers – King narrates this one himself! In case you’re wondering, it was perfect! I alternated between my physical and audio copies and chose to reread some passages via audio just to hear King speaking about particular topics.

  1. Count me as another On Writing reader who liked the book…sometimes, I felt like Stephen King was toying with readers, not entirely serious, but I got his message. And it was, “Just write!” And it inspires me as I tap away at my second book.
