Rating: 4/5 stars

Lussi Meyer has been out of work for months and is desperately looking for a new job in the publishing industry. Prestigious Blackwood-Patterson isn’t a perfect fit, but thanks to a bizarre series of events, Lussi finds herself hired. There’s one catch, in order to keep her job she must find the next superstar horror writer immediately. As soon as she arrives, Lussi finds herself the target of her co-worker’s pranks and things peak at the office’s secret Santa gift exchange where Lussi is gifted a demonic looking object. She’s seen one of these before, but has no idea the powers the object holds. When Lussi’s coworkers start to fall victim to horrific accidents, Lussi must track down whoever gifted her this cursed object in order to stop the turmoil.

SECRET SANTA is the perfect 80’s horror Christmas novel for the holidays! This is a mash-up of horror and comedy set in a dramatic office of a publishing house.

Lussi, our main character, is a down and out editor desperate to find a new job. What she finds is a job given to her on the heels of a death. I immediately clicked with Lussi’s personality and became invested in her journey through this new career and the strange events that follow. Lussi certainly isn’t someone who is going to let anyone push her around. She’s determined and headstrong, as well as motivated to get what she wants in life.

The premise of a secret Santa gift exchange unlocking a whole mess of horrific events thanks to one demonic present is unique and something I’ve not seen done before. In addition to a great premise, Schaffer adds in a folklore element associated with the gift that left me wanting to go research the topic more. Schaffer combines all of this with a comedic flare that makes the story both engrossing and downright addictive to read.

If you’re looking for some holiday horror with a great comedy vibe that will keep you entertained the entire time then look no further!
